What is a kidney transplant?

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a failing or non-functioning kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor. It is typically performed on individuals with end-stage kidney disease or kidney failure. The transplanted kidney takes over the role of filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood, restoring kidney function and improving the recipient's quality of life.

Who requires a Kidney Transplant?

Kidney transplantation is typically considered as a treatment option for individuals with end-stage kidney disease or kidney failure. Some common conditions that may lead to the need for a kidney transplant include:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

  • Diabetes

  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

  • Congenital Kidney Disorders

  • Other Kidney Disorders

Types of Kidney Transplant

There are two types of liver transplant-

  • Living donor liver transplant- The living donor undergoes thorough medical and psychological evaluations to ensure their suitability for donation and to minimize any potential risks.

  • Deceased donor liver transplant- Deceased donor kidneys are procured from individuals who have died due to accidents, trauma, or other causes of brain or cardiac death.

Who can donate?
  • The donor can be a spouse, relative or friend

  • The blood group should be compatible

  • The donor should be older than 18 years of age.

  • The physical and mental health of the donor should be good.

  • The donor should have a BMI (Body Mass Index) less than 35

What factors can disqualify a person as a donor?
  • Kidney disease or impaired kidney function

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Cancer

  • Chronic infections (such as HIV, hepatitis B or C)

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Significant heart, lung, or liver disease

  • Hepatitis B or C

  • Active tuberculosis

  • Systemic infections

  • Obesity

What are the risks of a kidney transplant?

Some complications from liver surgery may include:

  • Rejection

  • Infection

  • Surgical complications

  • Side effects of immunosuppressive medications

  • Cardiovascular problems

  • Kidney function issues

  • Surgical complications in the donor

It's important to note that the risks and complications associated with kidney transplantation can vary among individuals. The transplant team will provide detailed information about the potential risks, preventive measures, and post-transplant care to help manage and minimize these risks. Regular follow-up and adherence to the prescribed medication regimen are crucial for long-term success and to mitigate potential complications.
